Abstract

The study aims to analyze the role of social media networks in enhancing media students’ skills in producing digital content, based on the theory of digital determinism. It focused on evaluating how media students benefit from the capabilities of these networks to develop their technical and media skills, as well as analysing the tools and channels they rely on to learn content creation. The problem of the study is that social media networks impose great challenges on traditional media and require rapid development in methods of producing and disseminating content. The study also aims to measure media students’ proficiency in digital content production skills and evaluate their competence in using digital tools in light of the theory of digital determinism.
The study applied a sample survey approach, where data was collected from a sample of 171 male and female students from different media specializations at King Abdulaziz University. A survey was used to collect data related to the concepts of digital content creation, the channels used to learn how to produce the content, and the skills acquired from using these networks. The results of the study revealed that digital technology, especially social media networks, inevitably affects media students’ acquisition of digital content production skills. Students prefer platforms such as YouTube for self-learning, with a strong emphasis on visual skills such as creating videos. It is recommended that these tools be integrated into educational programs and courses.
