Determinants of Egyptian youth awareness of the concept of hate speech and its strategies in digital media: A field study

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the extent of Egyptian youth’s awareness of the concept of hate speech and its strategies adopted through digital media, and the extent of their awareness of the role of these means in confronting hate speech, by applying a field study on the audience of Egyptian university youth, using the questionnaire tool in the practical aspect, By taking advantage of the theory of dependence on the media, the study concluded that there is a dark face of digital media, which is the deepening of hate speech within society through the possibility of concealing the identity of the instigator of hatred, violence and racism, the ease of spreading verbal violence through social networks, the ease of insults and symbolic violence Which appears through comments, in addition to the ease of incitement through text conversations without the need for direct confrontation, but also concluded that there is a bright face where digital means contribute to deepening the aversion of young people towards extremism, intolerance and hatred through what it publishes of human stories of victims of the actions  of terrorist and extremist organizations, and the pictures, reports, news and video clips they publish of the destruction that extremist organizations inflict on countries and countries economic and social communities, and spreading the values ​​of tolerance and moderation through what it publishes from human stories and effective community participation from all segments of society, the interactivity and speed that characterizes digital means can be a platform contributing to the production of a new and alternative discourse to confront hate speech and spread awareness and intellectual security.
