Abstract

The current study aims to reveal the extent of the Egyptian public's awareness of the phenomenon of electronic begging on social media and its impact on their psychological manipulation. Within the framework of the third-person influence theory, the survey method, questionnaire, and psychological manipulation scale were used on a deliberate sample of (604) respondents in four governorates (Cairo, Alexandria, Minya, and Aswan). The study reached the following important results: 55.6% of the respondents had moderate knowledge of the phenomenon of electronic begging. 55.6% of the sample were exposed to electronic begging content, particularly on TikTok (68.9%) and Facebook (66.2%). 69.5% of the participants classified the presentation of medical conditions as the most effective method for eliciting sympathy. 64.9% of the respondents confirmed that electronic beggars exploit human emotions. 37.7% reported that they are more aware of psychological manipulation methods than others. There is a gap between theoretical understanding of the phenomenon and the impact it has had on them. Emotionally, women reported higher levels of awareness than men
