Cooking shows on Egyptian satellite channels and their relationship to women's adaptation to the price rise crisis in the context of the Narrative Structure Model

Abstract

This study aims to determine the role played by TV cooking shows to help Egyptian women in coping with the prices rise crisis, while monitoring differences in the level of adaptation to the crisis according to some demographic variables. Besides, the study investigates the role of cooking shows’ narrative in conveying experiences to the audience during the crisis, by measuring audience attitudes towards both the narrative structure of these shows and the narrative style of their presenters. The study is based on examining the principles of Narrative structure Model. Data collected through an online survey from a Purposive sampling, reached 410 women who watching cooking shows, aged 19 years and older. Based on the findings, cooking shows helped Egyptian women to some extent to cope with the prices rise crisis. Besides, cooking shows relied during the crisis mainly on modifying dietary habits, rather than calling for the abandonment of certain habits, since modifying certain habits might be easier than convincing the audience to completely abandon them. The results also indicated a correlation between the level of adaptation to the prices rise crisis and the sample’s attitudes towards both narrative structure of cooking shows and the presenters’ narrative style as well, which means that the narrative structure of cooking shows provided the audience with experiences that helped them to cope with the crisis.
