Semiology of the Discourse of the Egyptian Press towards Local Economic Issues: A Comparative Study in Semantic Analysis

Abstract

The eradication of poverty and the growth of the economy are two of the most important and related sustainable development goals. However، the global economy is currently in a recession، which has effects on countries around the world at the local level ، including Egypt . Consequently، the implementation of development plans at the state level has been impacted by high inflation rates، which have an impact on both the achievement of these goals on national development plans and fulfilling individual's well standard of living . This has highlighted numerous local challenges and shown the importance of the states' role in implementing strategies to address current issues.
The study targeted a semantic analysis to Egyptian newspapers  - for both investigative reports or opinion article  - by identifying the direct and embedded connotations of words and phrases that dealt with the impacts of global events and local economic decisions on  Egyptian citizens from January to April 2022، in the electronic version of El –Akhbar  ، Al-Ahali and Al-Sharouq newspapers. Semantic analysis was structured upon Ferdinand de Saussure linguistics analysis of the relationship between the signifier and the signified . The determinants of the study were identified as newspapers editorial policy ، the discourse of each newspapers and  their commitment to professional aspects. As for semantic analysis  ، results showed the dominance of  certain fields such as high prices and Ukrainian war. Specific fields prevailed in certain newspapers as the role of the government in reducing the burden of the economic crisis on citizens in Al-Akhbar newspaper ، incontrary to Al-Ahaly where poor people and fluctuating goods prices was prioritized
