The relation of Saudi women to TV Drama that presented through digital platforms: a field study in the uses and gratifications

Abstract

Saudi society has witnessed the spread of the phenomena of watching TV drama through digital platforms. Therefor, this study aims to understand the relation of Saudi women to TV Drama that presented through digital platforms. In addition, it seeks to discover the Saudi women's perspective on the negative aspects of this sort of drama. Utilizing the uses and gratifications' theory, the study relied on a survey method, and an electronic questionnaire was used to collect the data. A sample of 400 Saudi women was selected with snowball sampling. The study concludes that Netflix platform is ranked first among the most used and followed digital platforms by the study sample. Also, American drama ranked first in terms of the sample's favorite drama. Moreover, the results showed that ritual motives outperformed the utilitarian motives of the study sample. demonstrated a statistically significant correlation between exposure to television drama through digital platforms and between gratifications The study demonstrated the existence of a statistically significant correlation between viewing motives (ritual and utilitarian) and achieved gratifications.
