The significance of the film image of Arab places and characters as reflected by foreign films filmed in Arab countries: Comparative analytical study

Abstract

Cinema as an art and as a media is a powerful tool in influencing the public's perception for various issues. Many foreign films are interested in displaying the Arab identity, sometimes this is done by filming these films in Arab countries. This comes at a time when the Arab identity is suffering from distortion, And the wrong picture that is being presented about it. So, this study aims to monitor and analyze Arab places and characters in foreign films that are shot in Arab countries. This study is considered among the descriptive analytical studies, which attempts to monitor and analyze Arab places and characters in a detailed analysis of three foreign films Which was filmed in Arab countries during three different time from the history of cinema (ancient, medieval and modern).
Study relies on content analysis, and semantic analysis. The study also benefits from the media framework theory in addition to the contributions of "Christian Metz" in the field of film image semantics. The study reached several results, such as that there is a multiplicity and diversity in the methods of foreign films filmed in Arab countries, and The study films also provided a lot of information about Arab places and characters, And that these films contain normal positive stereotypes of Arab places and characters in exchange for sharp negative stereotypes about them, In addition to presenting pictures indicating that Arab societies suffer from social issues such as harassment, No compassion for animals and the spread of crime.
