The role of Facebook in providing Egyptian youth with news about the Israeli-Palestinian clashes 2021

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the role of Facebook in providing Egyptian youth with news about the Israeli-Palestinian clashes 2021, by monitoring the rate of use of Facebook by Egyptian youth and identifying the motives for using the platform as a source for news of the clashes, and knowing the most important pages of the platform that the respondents followed, as well as monitoring the most important news topics Which they followed on the platform about the clashes, and to know the effects resulting from this use.
The study relied on the uses and effects approach as a theoretical framework, and this study belongs to descriptive research that depends on the survey method, and data was collected using an electronic survey questionnaire that was distributed to an available sample of (400) individuals of Egyptian youth who use Facebook in the age group of 18 years to 35 years, during the period from 10/8/2021 to 9/9/2021.
 The study concluded with a set of results, most notably:
1- "The pages of Egyptian websites and news channels" and "the official Egyptian pages" topped the pages that the respondents follow on a permanent basis to know the news of the Israeli-Palestinian clashes in 2021.
2- The motive of "obtaining new news about the clashes" first with a percentage of (19,1%) as the most important  motives for respondents' use of Facebook to obtain news of the clashes ,then motive of "Understanding and interpreting the events around my" with a percentage of (15,9%).
3- The results of the study found that the most important news topics that the respondents followed are: "The displacement of Palestinian families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood" to come in first place with a rate of (16,5%) as one of the most important news topics that respondents followed on Facebook during the clashes. Also, "Egypt's donation of 500 million dollars for the reconstruction of Gaza" came first with a rate of (18,2%) as one of the most important news topics related to the Egyptian position on the clashes.
4- The most prominent cognitive effects were represented in “Knowing Egypt’s role in the reconstruction of Gaza”, “Knowing the Egyptian efforts to cease fire”, and the most important emotional effects were: "Feeling sad for the Palestinian martyrs, especially women and children," and the most important behavioral effects are "rejecting the practices of the Facebook administration by deleting content in solidarity with the Palestinian cause and circumventing the algorithms developed by the site."
