The effectiveness of using multimedia technologies in the experience of distance education during crisis: An Applied Study on Teaching Practical Courses in Faculties of Mass Communication in Egyptian Universities

Abstract

After Covid-19 pandemic, the university students were forced to receive all their lectures from home remotely, and the professors were forced to do that as well, regardless of the nature of the courses or specializations, and therefore with the new experience of distance learning, professors have many questions and problems in Communicating with the students, as the students also have a lot of remarks on the distance learning system, the nature of the courses they study and their ability to understand and apply them.
Therefore, this study seeks to monitor the pros and cons of the distance education experience for practical courses in media faculties on some of the professors of those courses as well as through the students. Media richness theory has been relied upon and assumes that the greater the degree of ambiguity and confusion of the communicative task, the better it is to use a richer method. The study also relied on Marshall McLuhan's technological determinism theory, which is concerned with the impact of communication technology on the behavior and habits of individuals. Therefore, in-depth interviews were conducted with professors and focus groups with groups of students from public and private universities.
The most important results of the study were that distance learning raised the technological skills of professors and students, and preserved the time and effort factor in attending the university in order to receive lectures, and the video element was the most attractive element for students during the interactive lectures, followed by the audio element and then the interactive presentation.
One of the study proposals is to convert courses related to learning computer applications, Video/Audio Editing and graphics programs to fully distance learning, office interviews with the course professor and computer labs for training.
And making the courses that need to work inside the studio with the theoretical hybrid education system to be remote, and the practical side to be inside the studio while reducing the number of students inside the place.
