Evaluating the Egyptian media's coverage of internal emergency events from 2019 to 2020: Study on the public and media experts

Abstract

This study attempted to identify the perceptions of the Egyptian general public and experts in the media field on the pros and cons that faces Egyptian media, while providing a future vision of how to improve its performance, since there are attempts by the state to improve Formal and private media, In light of the political, social and economic reforms, which were reflected in the media coverage, media performance and information related to the issues and topics on the agenda of media institutions in general, and the emergency events that are outside that agenda in particular, and thus this study aimed to know the evaluation of The public and media experts of media coverage on four emerging topics, which are: (the Darb al-Ahmar terroristic attack, the incident of the Egyptian station fire, the beginning of the spread of the Corona virus in Egypt, and the emerging bad weather and floods in Egyptian governorates), during the period from March 1, 2019 to April 30, 2020, within the framework of “Information Seeking model”, the data collection tools  used were: (the electronic questionnaire and in-depth interview). The most important results show: The reliance of most of the respondents of the study on the Egyptian media to obtain information on internal emergency news, compared to Arab or foreign media during the two study periods. It can be confirmed through the results of the study, that the performance of the Egyptian media, whether in the Floods and Corona crises, has greatly improved compared to previous periods, as the performance of the media was characterized by keeping pace with successive events and developments, as it provided information immediately and being available  in the field of the event, as well as news sites that distinguished by providing humanistic stories related to events.
