Recent global trends in print and digital journalism funding research: A critical analytical view

Abstract

This study aims to monitor the most important issues and problems related to the funding of the print and digital press industry, which, on the other hand, reflect the agenda of the researchers’ priorities and interests in the issues raised within the framework of this field, and the extent of disparity or consistency between scientific schools prevalent in different societies in this context, and also seeks to highlight the path of development in the studies of financing the print and digital press in the world and knowledge of the most prominent issues and new models, and their relationship to the transformations witnessed by different societies, as well as the changes in the new communication environment. In this context, the researcher has used the "second-level analysis" method, which is one of the most important methodological methods used in analyzing secondary sources, such as studies, research and literature related to any field of human knowledge, and defines the objective framework of the analysis community, in the set of studies and research, whether published or unpublished in Arabic and English, related to the topic, which the researcher was able to obtain through a comprehensive survey of the Arab and Western libraries, whether through traditional libraries, or through databases and information available on the Internet except (books and master’s theses ) during the time period from 2014 to 2019, and the number of studies and research that were subjected to analysis reached about (150) research papers and doctoral thesis, by (127) foreign studies, (23) Arab studies, and the researcher relied in selecting the sample on Arab and international databases and reliable scientific sources that have a great degree of credibility in academia. The results of the analysis indicated that there are a set of paths of development in the interests of studies and research concerned with the issue of financing the print and digital press, at the substantive level. Indeed, in many experiences and societies, it has been able to develop its traditional economic models, and put forward new and alternative economic models from within, and the results of the analysis concluded that despite the tremendous technological developments that contemporary societies have witnessed since the mid-nineties until now, it is one of the main factors and challenges that were It threatens the survival of the print press industry, but on the other hand, it has carried with it many mechanisms to overcome and get out of these crises, whether by enabling the press and publishing industry in general, to shift from the traditional model to the digital model, or by pushing researchers, thinkers and critics to put forward new economic models to fit the nature of these developments.
