Using means of communication to reduce irregular migrants: Case studies on a sample of the organizations involved in illegal immigration in Italy

Abstract

The researcher sought to explore the communication roles of civil society organizations (the study sample) in Italy, which concerned with providing various services to immigrants like, extracting official documents and educational activities in addition to their role in raising awareness among immigrants by illegal means of the dangers of these routes in reaching Italy as a stable Or as a corridor to other European countries such as France, Germany and England. This study seeks to reveal the nature of the role of communication with these organizations by studying the case of some organizations such as the “International Organization for Migration (IOM)”, “Save the Children” and “Amnesty International”. In order to benefit from its communication roles in building communication strategies that help both governmental and civil society organizations in Egypt to set awareness programs, and in formulating communication campaigns to reduce this phenomenon.
The study reached many of the following results:
1- The diversity of non-governmental organizations interested in the field of illegal immigration in Italy, which works to provide communication activities and the use of mass media, both traditional and new, to educate young people coming to the experience of illegal immigration of its dangers.
2- The work in the field of illegal immigration aims at the solidarity of all organizations of all kinds, whether these organizations are governmental or non-governmental.
3- The results of the case study conducted by “Save the Children” indicated the need for children to participate in the process of producing awareness-raising publications and films related to the field of illegal immigration, whether in Egypt or Italy, on both sides.
4- Modern means of communication are on the top of the list of the means of communication on which the organizations - the subject of study - depend; as the organizations rely on it to a large extent compared to these traditional means, which is what all three organizations agreed on that the website has a role in disseminating information about the dangers of illegal immigration, and as a means of disseminating information related to the contents of communication campaigns, as well as in disseminating statistics that show the most exporting countries.
