University Youth Exposure to Sarcastic Pages on Social Media and Its Relation to the Phenomenon of Cyberbullying: A Field Study within the Framework of the Theory of the Third Person's Effect

Abstract

The current study seeks to identify young people's perceptions of the perceived effects of cyberbullying on oneself by employing the theory of third person effect to study the effect of sarcastic pages on Facebook increasing the phenomenon of cyberbullying through:
- Knowing the effect of exposure to sarcastic pages on increasing rates of cyberbullying on the self (the individual himself) and the other (society), and those effects are: (cognitive effects, emotional effects, behavioral effects).
- Determining the extent to which demographic factors (gender - the economic and social level - the university the student belongs to) are affected by the sample's perception of the third person's influence.
- Knowing the relationship between the perceptual component of the third person's influence and the behavioral component (support for censoring the satirical pages spread on social media).
- Knowing the utilitarian motives underlying the respondents' exposure to the scarcastic pages on social media.
 
 
The study reached several results, the most important of which are:
1- The results of the current study indicated that 93.5% of the study sample believed that social media is one of the causes of the spread of cyberbullying, and it is a natural result as the results of the study (Ghada Mustafa Abido 2019) indicate that the study sample showed that the members of the study sample believe that Cyberbullying is prevalent on social media, with a rate of 91%.
2- 40% of the respondents in the current study indicated that social media helped spread rumors, which was confirmed by the study (Ghada Mustafa Abido 2019), as its study confirmed that one of the methods of bullying spread on social media is spreading rumors, and that is 33%.
3- The results of the current study indicated that 16.5% were exposed to the exploitation of their own photos, and the results of (Reham Sami Yusef 2018 study) confirmed that the members of their sample were exposed to badly exploiting images by 21.7%, and the previous results reflect that the exploitation of images of individuals is more than commonly used images and forms of bullying.
4- The current study confirmed that they ban individuals if they were exposed to a situation of abuse or bullying by them, by 37%, and the study (Reham Sami 2018) confirmed that 69.9% of the study sample of the respondents ban or block personal accounts that practice bullying them .
5- It is evident from the results of the current study that 83.5% of the respondents in the current study sample put their personal picture on their Facebook account, and the study (Hemat Hassan Abdel Hamid Al-Sakka) also confirmed that the members of the private sample put their real photos on their accounts. Personality rate of 49%, which means the desire of individuals to put their own pictures so that other individuals can get to know them.
6- The results of the current study indicate that the motives for individuals' exposure to satirical pages are discussions with others and dialogue with them, at a rate of 37.5%, the motive for escaping life's problems was 50.3%, the motive for escaping by 38%, and the motive for escaping from boredom was 19.5%. As for the study (Hemat Hassan Abdel Majid), it indicated that the motives for exposure to social media were 28% for the motive for discussing topics and issues, while 17% believed that the motive behind their follow-up was to escape from life's problems, and 38% were motivated by entertainment and recreation. Members of the sample, the motive was to fill the spare time and escape by 40%.
