This study aimed to uncover the techniques of argumentation employed by essay writers in their coverage of religious discourse issues while monitoring the warrantees, restrictions and strategies that emerged in these covered issues.
The study was applied to a sample of Egyptian newspapers represented in Al-Ahram and Al-Watan newspapers during the period from 1/1/2017 to 6/30/2017. These two newspapers were chosen because they were among the newspapers most concerned with issues of religious discourse, in addition to the fact that they contain on their pages various ideological trends of article writers, and the year 2017 was also chosen because it witnessed intensive discussion of a number of religious discourse issues, such as: the issue of renewal and the development of religious discourse, the issue of combating terrorism and religious extremism, the issue of oral divorce, and the issue of unifying the Friday sermon. The study relied on the theory of argumentation as a theoretical framework for it by merging between Chaim Perelman's model and Stephen Tolman's model in argumentation, two models that are compatible with the nature of the press texts.
The study concluded with the interest of Al-Ahram and Al-Watan newspapers about the issues of renewing religious discourse and combating terrorism and religious extremism more than other issues of religious discourse. Terrorism and extremism are the main concerns of the Egyptian press with a focus on issues of religious discourse.
